Last possible letterbox day of the year: thwarted.

So I'm currently standing at 390 finds and thought it would be lovely to end the year at 400.  How nice would that be?  I pulled together a whole bunch of clues for Kitchener-Waterloo, packed all my letterboxing stuff, and headed out this morning.

Well, I made it only about as far as Dixie Road exit on the 401 before I turned around.  I decided to give up after seeing 10 cars that had spun out along the highway and on/off ramps.  Ten is the magic number.  Drove home.

It was sad.  I really wanted to get a couple of new boxes... The boxes I would have been hunting were by a range of different letterboxers, some known to me, some not.  Damned snow.

Well, then back at home, sipping spiked coffee (hey! it's still holidays for me!) and carving up some new stuff.

Snowy trails!

  1. I know just how you are feeling. We were supposed to go to the 13.0.0.0.8 event in PA today but we canceled out for fear of the snow coming as well as my wifes head cold. I am currently sitting at 398 finds and was also hoping to get to 400. Well maybe 1000 by next year!
    Don't Panic!

    1. That's crummy - I know you guys are getting slammed... We're just getting enough snow to make the roads greasy. Well, actually, everywhere *around* Toronto is getting it. Sitting here in my apartment, it looks positively nice out. Hopefully you'll get to 400 soon... If you can make it to 1000 in one year, you're living in an awfully fruitful letterboxing paradise, my friend. (I may show up for a visit.)

  3. I was in KW yesterday to get snow tires and a new car battery. Afterwards I was going to try to find at least 4 boxes, but when I got to Rockway Gardens for Flutterby I opened my backpack to find that I forgot my letterboxing gear. Had my emergency kit in the car but it's just a black ink crayola and a few index cards. Had a nice quick walk at the park but it was quite cold and without my stamps and markers I decided to wait for another opportunity and have a fuller letterboxing experience. I'm looking forward to slightly longer daylight hours and hopefully some above zero, sunny days in January to go letterboxing. -- Lone R

    1. So... are you saying that the KW is jinxed? I would believe it.

Actually, I don't mind subzero boxing if there are blue skies. It means that the trail is frozen, not muddy, and that theoretically the streams are frozen enough to walk on. Unless they're your boxes, which I inevitably fall through the ice on...
